INCREASE IN RATES FOR SEA CONTAINER TRANSPORTATION FROM DECEMBER 2019

The rates for container shipments from China to European ports increased significantly in December 2019, namely almost 1.5 times, according to the data of the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI).

The increase has affected all major transportation routes. The reasons for the growth were:

Entry into force from 2020 of the new IMO requirements of the International Maritime Organization, which are aimed at reducing the sulfur emissions contained in the fuel.
Significant increase in demand for trucking ahead of the Chinese New Year.

The average spot rate from Asia to Northern Europe rose 40% to $ 1,124 per TEU in December 2019. The rate increased by 13% compared to the beginning of 2019.

The value of the SCFI freight index for Mediterranean ports increased by 54% - to $ 1,185 per TEU, which is 19% more than at the beginning of 2019.

Due to the current state of affairs, this may indicate that the cost of sea freight from China will increase significantly. Direct container rail trains are a worthy alternative.
